Sound and heat insulation

The floor insulation

How well a house is built and insulated often only becomes apparent after the tenants have moved in. Anyone who skimps on the interior finishing of the floor will get the bill at the latest when other tenants move into the house. Because: How loud and quiet it is in the house, is for a durable living quality evenly of crucial importance. Impact noise can become a burden in the long run, because the noise level it creates should not be underestimated. And what efficient thermal insulation means for heating costs can be seen in black and white in the figures on every bill.

Problems that may arise:

  • Footsteps, moving chairs, loud music and conversations are transmitted to lower or adjacent rooms if impact sound insulation is inadequate. This works by introducing structure-borne sound into the building structure and transmitting it to the rooms below or next to it as airborne sound.
  • Another problem could be that tiled floors are also often perceived by users as "cold underfoot". Especially if there is no underfloor heating or heated rooms under the covering, the floor cools down quickly.

Solution:

  • The impact sound insulation mat is a mat only 1.3 mm thin for reducing impact sound in rooms with ceramic floor coverings. In addition to improving room acoustics, the mat reduces the feeling of coldness underfoot without compromising the effect of underfloor heating. The 4-layer construction with a combination of top and bottom fleece, a special quartz sand / EVA mixture and a high-strength special fabric opens up a wide range of applications in residential, commercial and industrial areas.

How to insulate?

Ideally, the work is done when a new floor covering is to be laid anyway, or you want to carry out a renovation. Which insulation material is right for the interior finishing of floors depends on the requirements of the building and the floor used. Our sound and heat insulation mat from DURAL is ideally suited for use in residential, commercial and industrial areas due to its high-quality composition.

What do walking/room sound and impact sound mean?

Lärm von NachbarnLaute Geräusche von Nachbarn

When walking on hard floors such as parquet or laminate, a walking sound is actually always generated. If you have a carpet as a subfloor, it "swallows" a large part of the sound and walking noise is barely audible or not audible at all. Walking sound is therefore the sound that can be heard in the same room.

Impact sound is the sound that is perceived as structure-borne sound when the floor is used in underlying or adjacent rooms. Structure-borne sound is the sound that propagates in a solid body. Impact sound is therefore the sound that is perceived in the room below.

Impact sound insulation therefore primarily ensures that neighbors are not disturbed. Minimizing the walking/room noise, on the other hand, is only a comfort factor that only serves to increase living comfort (the noise of one's own footsteps is perceived less by oneself).

Impact sound insulation for tiles

First of all, the installed floor covering is of interest for the generation of impact sound. Soft floors, such as carpeting, absorb a high amount of impact sound, while hard floors, such as tiles, cause a very high and very noticeable impact sound when walked on if left uninsulated.

With tiles, which usually transmit impact sound even more easily than other materials, good sound insulation is essential, because as soon as you step on the tile, you notice that the resulting sound is louder than with other floors.

Whether you have a new build or are renovating, our soundproofing mat can also be used to retrofit the flooring in old buildings. Make sure that the impact sound insulation is evenly distributed throughout the house - if certain rooms are better insulated and others are worse, the insulation will not be able to achieve its full effect.

A tip from us: already at the time of purchase, pay attention to the different types of tiles, because even here there are already big differences in terms of impact sound insulation.

Soundproofing regulations

For all new buildings there is the DIN 4109, there are all necessary and mandatory sound insulation measures in the building area regulated. The older the building, the more difficult it is to meet the strict standards, and even in new buildings, the implementation of the prescribed sound insulation is often inadequate on the part of the building contractor.

In addition to the legal requirements, measures are also necessary within the dwelling to ensure adequate sound insulation. So that neighbors are not disturbed, one works in the area of the floor with the so-called impact sound and room sound.

Our sound and thermal insulation mat from DURAL

The DURAL impact sound insulation mat is designed for indoor use and can be used on a wide variety of substrates such as wood, concrete, screed, old tiled floors and the like. Its good thermal conductivity and absorption of changes in length allow it to be installed both above underfloor heating systems and with supplementary surface heating systems installed above the mat. Due to its low thickness, it is ideal for use in renovations when low installation heights are required.  The mat is ideally suited for the production of resumable coverings of ceramic tiles and natural stone. AE screeds can be covered with tiles from a residual moisture of 3%, which can significantly reduce the construction time.

Features

The combination of light and soft with heavy and hard layers is the basis for the diverse properties of the impact sound insulation mat.

  • Sound absorbing to the subfloor
  • Impact sound reduction of up to -14dB
  • Improvement of room acoustics
  • Good thermal conductivity, ideally suited for underfloor heating
  • Polyester fleece - Silica sand/EVA mixture - Polypropylene fabric, Polyester fleece
  • Stress relieving and pressure stable
  • Only 1.3 mm thin
  • Free of PVC and halogens
  • Flame retardant

The properties for impact sound improvement are certified with a test certificate of the Materialforschungs- und Prüfanstalt Leipzig/Germany.

You can find installation instructions for the mat in the article itself.

Notes:

In general, the generally accepted rules of technology must be observed!

The following applies to all products/materials: The usability with regard to mechanical and chemical loads must be carefully checked in each individual case before laying the mat. Protect the material from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
